Wine Tasting 24 July 24

Mervyn hosted. It was a fine evening and he chose Fizz ! It was my initiation into this ancient and honorable section of our club (Terence Gale is writing an official history), and I was wondering what secret ritual would be revealed during the course of the evening. It was but I cannot tell you or I will be struck down with botrytis. I am told that there are no blogs of winetasting, so this is a first (and last?).

Paul, Brian, Stephen, Terence and Mervyn, and me with two late cancellations. There were thus six of us with six bottles and no spittoon….

My glasses (six of them) were XL large, for white wine, so I had got something right. Mervyn had prepared a comprehensive shart of the six unidentified (to him too!) bottles (how this is achieved is a club secret) complete with name and producer, price, shop of origin, grape variety, alcohol%, and tasting notes. By tasting we had to guess which was which and set out our order of preference. It was not easy, and required many repeat sips until the mists cleared, or perhaps thickened.

In the event the individual results of correct identification were 3,3,2,2,1,1 – ie average of 2 correct. I was told that this was a good score for a WT group! I scored 1 but I did pick out the one champagne in the group of six. Most popular was the Crémant de Bourgogne, Louis Bouillot, Nuit St. Georges, Eu9.79 from Carrefour.

Our host produced some delicious accopmanying food. Beryl took two wives to a restaurant locally.

I think I overloaded on Fizz
Bottles remained undislosed until a Big Reveal
Tasting is a serious business
Requiring concentration
Scoring is a science

A fun evening on a warm night with warm company. Thanks to Mervyn for his hospitality and bubbles originality – a first for Fizz apparently. And thanks to all for the fun, and making my initiation so enjoyable.

Wine-Tasting

A convivial evening was held at the home of Martin Vaughan and his wife Fay at 7.30, February 24.

This was our opening gathering for 2022…….8 participants were able to sample and try to recognize 6 different red wines from two countries, Spain and Portugal. Highest score was 4 from Paul……very commendable …….

Wine Tasting

September 30, 2021

Our host for the 30 September 2021 wine-tasting was Tony Raeburns.    Seven of us enjoyed   sampling and trying to identify a selection of ‘Lesser Known European Reds’ coming from France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. As usual our tastes varied but a score of 3 on 6 was achieved and was highly commendable.

November 23, 2021

Stephen and Kate Long were our hosts for this month’s wine-tasting on November 23rd. The title ‘Swiss red varietals’ was intriguing and included a selection of 6 different grape origins ranging from Syrah, Cornalin, Humagne Rouge and the well- known Pinot Noir……. Again 3 out of the six reds were correctly identified……

Wine-Tasting Group 2021

We have been very fortunate that there has been good support for our group in these challenging times……though who can resist a glass or two of wine to talk of many things, as the quote goes by Lewis Carroll, from the Walrus and the Carpenter ‘the time has come the walrus said, to talk of many things, of shoes and ships, and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings’…….

So on June 30, we were kindly hosted by Paul Sochaczewski and his wife Monique. Paul provided 6  varying red wines from Italy, whose labels were conveniently covered by the traditional ‘socks’ donated by Hamish McCombie some eons of time ago…..the highest score was 3 out of the 6 correctly identified.

On July 13 our hosts were from Morges, Ian Cappin and his wife Anne. The choice of wines that evening, were from different regions of Spain, whose most well-known reds are the Rioja wines……. again the highest score was 3 out of 6.

August 27 was our latest wine-tasting evening hosted by David Gwilliam and his wife Paddy. Again we were confronted by wines from Italy, which all seemed to be ‘ruby’ red with rich plum aromas and cherry fruit flavors…..and difficult to differentiate. Highest score was only 2 correct…….

OF note: Our wine group consists of some 25 members, and we like to have at least 6 participants with a maximum of 8 for a session to be held…….the ladies generally organize a restaurant for themselves and are there to drive their husbands safely home………!

Our next wine-tasting will be hosted by Tony Raeburn with the theme ‘lesser known European reds’ on the 30 September at 7.30pm……. 6 ‘winers’ have already signed in…..

Wine-tasting, Wednesday, 12 May, 2021, 7pm.

Our first wine-tasting since January 2020, was just like a breath of fresh air; 7 of us enjoyed an evening of chit-chat and trying to solve the covered (Hamish’s socks) labels of 6 bottles of red wine from the surrounding region of Prangins….with a final decanting of a 40 (1981) year old vintage Bordeaux red which was much appreciated…..even by the ladies who had come to collect their husbands……

Wine tasting, August 30

Dave selected some excellent Italian reds for this tasting and laid on a good spread including a superb brie.

There were 6 wines with the descriptions Dave found on the internet below

F – Cannonau

Full body, nice and beautiful aroma. Purple and velvet color. Nice balance of tannin and low acidity. Scent of leather, slightly earthy, dominent of dark plum, dark berries.

A – Barolo

Clear, medium ruby. Clean, moderate intensity aroma of blackberry, violet. Dry, high acidity, strong tannins, full body and prolonged finish.

C – Tripudium

Dark cherry colour, an intense nose of ripe red berries, slightly spicy, reminiscent of juniper, cloves and violets, a rich prelude, full-bodied on the palate with distinct tannins, subtle nuances, a long, intense full-bodied wine from Sicily’s southern climes.

D – Corvina

Corvina produces light to medium body wines with a light crimson coloring. The grapes’ naturally high acidity can make the wine somewhat tart with a slight, bitter almond note.[2] The finish is sometimes marked with sour-cherry notes

E – Primitivo

Bouquet is a bit flat with cherry notes. The palate delivered aromas of cherry, blackberry, dried plum, pepper notes followed by a sweetness. Spices could be a bit more. Noticeable Tannins but flat in acidity.

B – Ser Lapo – Chianti Classico

Medium ruby with slight watery rims. Classic nose of earthy characters and balsamic notes, plum and cherry, cedar wood and leather. On the palate well balanced, great acidity and good structure.
